Leafspring

This photo was taken on an old steam locomotive on display in Pittsburg, Kansas. The locomotive was a Kansas City Southern yard switcher. The leaf spring you see here provides the suspension to the main drive wheel below it. Steam locomotives are fascinating machines. They are almost alive. Each one has a unique personality. Old engineers tell me that some were easy riders, easy to fire. Others were just the opposite. An engineer would typically have his favorite locomotive.
