The Late Great Front Porch

American homes used to always have a front porch. On that front porch, sheltered from the elements and sun, people would gather and discuss the farm markets, business, church and politics. Neighbors would great one another and it was part of the social fabric of the community.
Since WW2 and the advent of the suburb and the ranch style house the front porch has been missing. What a loss. We have turned inside to the television and air conditioning. Could this be the cause of the huge gaps in viewpoints in the US? Hard to tell.
What things have been lost that you think have made a big impact on society?
Go out on your front porch tonight, no matter how big or small, and sit there for a while. Think about what you have been missing as your neighbors walk by.
Take care and have a great Wednesday.

Ha! I posted a pic taken from my front porch today.

This is a classic, beautiful house. Really nice shot.

i LOVE front porches....luckily we live in an area where there are many...and they get used.

it's been neat this spring to watch the emergence- just the slightest warming of the weather and all of us have been sitting out, eating dinner, reading books, gabbing, etc.

I lived in the East coast in the 80's and luckily all the houses had porches, then we lived for a while in another state in the West coast and there were no porches! But they sure add a charm to every house and when I think of the US houses they all have porches!

Cris sent me here. I have always wanted to live in a house with a front porch again. I haven't had a porch since I was in college.

You are so right about porches, have you noticed that many homes now are getting porches back? I know here in Bend Oregon the newer homes now all have porches. It just gives such good charactor to a place, like Welcome
