Greensburg, Kansas...A Green Future

First off I want to welcome Anita to the site. If you read the comment to yesterday's post you will find Anita who experienced the tornado and still lives in Greensburg.

Today's post is about Greensburg's Green future. Many of the new buildings going up in Greensburg are "green" in nature. Take for example the 5.4.7 Arts Center being put up by KU students. This is a solar and wind power building.

The 5.4.7 stands for the date the tornado hit, May 4th 2007. If you click on the picture you can read about the project.

I think it is wonderful that the town is committed to not just rebuilding itself, but to reinventing itself. They could have just thrown up buildings for the sake of replacing what was destroyed, but they have chosen to move forward and make a better life for the entire town.
As an architect that has been involved in a "green" building project, I applaud this town for their vision.

Such a great attitude this town has about re-building. This is another quality series. Speaks to me, too, because my mom grew up in Kansas and I spent much time (including a summer as a photojournalism intern) with my grandparents there.

Happy to read about the rebuilding of the town. That tornado was so devestating. Thanks for the followup shots.

That's very cool how they are building their new buildings... very smart.
