Front Porch to a Rail Yard

This picture was taken from about 20 feet in the air on the Commercial Street footbridge. I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem of a front porch. Many of you don't remember my whole series on front porches. You might want to dig back in the archives for that.
Tomorrow, more from the footbridge...until then write if the mood strikes.

Thematic Photography #17 - Angles IV, The Finale.

One more angles shot for this week's challenge from Carmi. This building shot was taken, yes, from the Commercial Street Footbridge. In fact, I will be highlighting a series of shots that can be taken from that or very near that Springfield landmark. Watch for a return even to my porch shots!

Take care and have a great week!

Thematic Photography #17 - Angles III

I went out Saturday morning looking for some angle shots for Carmi's angle challenge. I have visited this shot before from the Commercial Street Footbridge. The last time I didn't have such an uncluttered background. Fortunately this time I had a nice container train blocking the more cluttered background that faced me the last time I worked this shot.

Alas, life is never perfect and this time I had a lens flare issue but rather than fight it I decided to enhance it and make it more prominent in the post processing. Let me know what you think.

Homecoming 2008

Homecoming is a time to laugh, a time to cry. It is a time of getting dressed up and seeing who is with who.

Amy organized a photo shoot with all her friends and their dates. I thought this was a fun shot to start the series off with.

Happy Birthday Chewie...

Chewie has been a part of our life for almost a year now. According to his papers he was a year old yesterday. Of course it seems everyone is getting into this election...

Rocky Mountain High

Rocky Mountain wildflowers near Mary Murphy Mine. Just thinking about the growing environment here makes me marvel at the divine design that went into these flowers.

Thematic Photography #16 - The Passion of Nature

Oops, so much for the "family" nature of this blog. If you remember from the last posting of walking sticks I told you I thought it was mating season. Now you know why I came to this scientific conclusion!

This was at the Santa Fe Trail rest stop in Eastern Colorado.

Thematic Photography #16 - Man and Nature

This photograph is of an old railroad bridge near St. Elmo, Colorado. The bridge in on the old Denver, South Park and Pacific narrow gauge line to Alpine Tunnel and beyond. This line was a marvel of engineering which may have proved its undoing. It was over engineered with fancy retaining walls and bridges which the more economically minded Denver and Rio Grande avoided. By taking time to build well the DSSP&P lost the race and the D&RG got all the business.

I like the way this bridge fits in the surrounding environment, but remember the natural surroundings have grown back after having been stripped to build the railroad.

Thematic Photgraphy #16 - Returning to Nature

Part of the crumbling Mary Murphy Mine near St. Elmo, Colorado. Abandoned mines are all over the state of Colorado, while picturesque they need to be treated with care as tunnels can collapse and those shafts can be deep.

These mines are slowly returning to nature in the cold heights of the Rocky Mountains.

Nature - Thematic Photography # 16

Most of you will recognize this as my banner shot from a few weeks ago. Carmi at Written, Inc. has this thematic photography #16 up and it is Nature so I thought this one would fit the bill. I have not gotten out much the past couple weeks hence the lack of new posts.

This was taken at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. We had an early morning field trip for our camera clubs calendar project.

I hope everyone is doing well and go out and get some of those nature pictures!

Walking Sticks

We recently stopped at one of those roadside historical markers in Eastern Colorado that say you can see the wagon wheel ruts of the Santa Fe Trail. Well we never did see the ruts but there were walking sticks all over.

It must have been mating season because the ground was teaming with them. Never seen anything like it.

Sunday Afternoon at Plaster Stadium

A college campus is a quiet place on a Sunday afternoon. Teresa and I went to the Ozarks Celebration Festival that is held annually on the Missouri State Campus and then we wandered around campus.

Simple Reflections

This reflection shot was taken of Hammons Tower off of the Mediacom Ice Park (Formerly the Jordan Valley Ice Park) here in Springfield. Hammons Tower is the only really tall building in Springfield.

Boy it is quiet out there! I think everyone is on vacation.

Father and Daughter at Jordan Valley Park

A sunny Labor Day at Jordan Valley Park makes a nice setting for a picnic to watch people and the water features of this great park.

This shot was taken with my 10 - 20 mm wide angle lens. A little work was done in Photoshop, and Color Efex Pro 3.0. I will be giving a small talk on Color Efex Pro at the next meeting of our camera club on September 11. If you are a local reader be sure and come. You can find the link at the right.
