University of Missouri - The Columns
THE symbol of the University of Missouri is this set of six columns in the commons area near Jesse Hall.
The columns are all that remains of the first building on site, the old Academic Hall. It was destroyed by fire on January 9, 1892. The columns were severely damaged and it was determined to remove them. The Alumni objected and raised the funds to preserve the six iconic columns and today they remain, the symbol of the University and the site of many traditions on this great campus.
The University was the first state university situated west of the Mississippi River. In the next post we will see a way the University benefited from this status.
As a side note, today Teresa and I are traveling to Springdale, Arkansas. We will be shooting the opening bout of the Northwest Arkansas Roller Girls for 2009.
